RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
