Tropical Storm the storm is predicted to escalate to a rare category five cyclone as it turns towards Jamaica, causing dangerous rapid inundation and rock falls.

The cyclone, which registered winds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is now shifting north-west in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to make landfall by midweek, according to weather experts.

Warnings of blackouts and structural damage have been issued as the hurricane brings up to 30 inches of rainfall and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above normal levels. "Take cover without delay," residents have been advised.

The cyclone is the 13th named hurricane in the ongoing Atlantic season, which normally finishes in November.

Highest-Level Cyclone Risk

A Category 5 hurricane is the most intense classification, with wind speeds of at least 157mph.

Although this storm is projected to reduce in intensity to a Category 4 hurricane before arriving at Jamaica, authorities said there was "almost no noticeable change in the total effects" upon landfall, and that the hurricane will be "equally strong" when it hits the nation.

"Several days of destructive gusts and torrential rain are underway and will cause severe and deadly rapid water accumulation and many rock slides," advised meteorological officials.

The nation's leader the statesman said: "I know that there are many Jamaicans who are concerned, who are deeply troubled, and rightfully so: concern is justified.

"However the optimal approach to manage worry and any nervousness and anxiety is to remain prepared."

Inhabitants are being instructed to fortify their houses with sandbags and timber panels, and to stock up on essentials.

Warnings are also ongoing for areas in the neighboring country encompassing the capital, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is anticipated to bring comparable impacts by the middle of next week.

Landslides already being caused by the cyclone have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

The hurricane is forecast to move across Cuba by midweek before moving through the Greater Antilles and entering the Atlantic.
