The McLaren driver narrowly beat fellow driver and championship contender the Australian for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the title advantage from Piastri by a single point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, beat the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Until that point, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair during the running before the sprint shootout scheduled for 6:30 PM GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in realistic title contention, sitting 36 points Norris, finished in 17th position as his Red Bull team opted for a different programme. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to go off, if briefly, when he spun at corner four early in the session. Tsunoda lost control over the exit kerbs before sliding over the escape zone, and was lucky to escape with just a light touch of the barrier. Ferrari's the seven-time champion also lost it, at the conclusion of the session, rotating twice through the high-speed corner leading to the last turn on to the start-finish straight. Hamilton ended the session in 19th, just behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren drivers were significantly quicker of the remaining drivers, with the German's Sauber third fastest, 0.619secs slower than Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of Mercedes' Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
