This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
